Outline
Thesis: In the novel of A Handmaid’s Tale, there are many issues being raised, that we are faced with daily in our world such as religion, pollution, and women’s rights.

I. Religion is used in the novel as a form of control over the people keeping them with fear of rebelling against their own beliefs.

1. On July 16, 2009, a nineteen year old man living with his parents got dismissed as an altar server at church because he is gay, disallowing the man to serve god because of his preference in sexual partner.

2. President Obama speaks on religion, showing that just like in the novel, government is based on religion as well.

II. In the novel, women have become infertile due to the toxins and the pollution which gives insight that the contamination not only contaminates Earth alone, but the people who live in it as well.

1. A recent article about pollution states that pollution endangers the life of six out of ten Americans.

2. Researchers have linked low IQ scores with air pollution before birth, relating not only the health problems with it, but also mental stability.

III. Women’s rights have been an issue throughout history and day by day women around the world keep fighting for their rights that are taken away like in the novel of The Handmaid’s Tale.

1. In the US, immigrant women are taken into detention and taken away from their children without being able to provide for their children.

2. In the novel, women were taken away from their families and friends and stripped of their rights and freedom.

This is very much on track. Just be sure to be as specific as possible at all moments, both when talking about reality and the novel. For example, in I.2, be prepared to give actual quotes with Obama speaking ABOUT (not "on") religion. When writing about the novel, supply actual moments in the story and don't limit yourself to just saying that certain issues or events happen "somewhere" or "throughout" the novel. Remember that one of the goals of the essay is to demonstrate your thorough familiarity with the plot's details, not just knowing what it was about in general. Your plan looks fine, so it is just a matter of filling in the details.

Thanks, I do plan on giving more detail, but I wanted to see if I was understanding the assignment correctly.
