I. The most outstanding example of an unethical psychological experiment is “The Perils of Obedience” by Stanley Milgram who is a Yale University social psychologist.
1. Milgram’s experiment included an actor “the student” and a test participant “the teacher”. When the student gave a wrong answer, he is “shocked” by the teacher untruthfully.
2. “He (Milgram) had invented a kind of torture machine. But it was not immediately clear what he should do with his discovery.”- Ian Parker.
II. Psychologist John Money oversaw the case and reported the reassignment of David Reimer.
1. When David was a baby, his penis was accidentally burned off during circumcision. He was raised as a girl, constructed vagina and given hormonal supplements.
2. “Unfortunately, the subject is not always treated with the respect he deserves.” –Baumrind.
III. The experiment of “the learned Helplessness” is an experiment similar to “The Perils of Obedience” in some way.
1. Similar to Milgram’s experiment, dogs were put in three groups and giving different type of electric shocks and study the reaction and effect to animals’ helplessness related to human.
2. Subjects’ feeling were ignored and tortured seriously.
Dr. Jung: I don’t know can I use this example or not, since you said no animal test. This test is related with human psychological, many types of animals were used in this test in stead of human because they could not use human as the test subject.
